First, I'd like to thank Senator Reid for the opportunity to write at his "Candidates Table" here at Give 'Em Hell, Harry. I look forward to working with him as part of the Nevada delegation.
For the next week, I'll be posting about the problems facing our country, some ideas for solutions, and a little more about myself so that you can get to know me. I'd also like for these posts to be more of a discussion, so I encourage you to leave comments so that we can start a dialog.
I am very concerned that the Republicans currently in charge of our government are leading our country down the wrong track. A departure from our core American Values has led us down this path.
I grew up in Plains, GA, a country crossroads town of 650 people. I spent a lot of time working with my hands in the peanut warehouse. Back then, Jimmy Carter was just my father, a peanut farmer, and we were not any different from anyone else.
The most important thing I learned growing up in such a small community is this: even if you disagree with people on certain issues, you can always find a consensus. You can think that your neighbor is wrong about something, but you can still think that he's a good man. The things that we agree on, those values that we share are what make us a community.
There are certain values that make us all a part of the larger, American community. Core American Values are those on which we all agree:
We honor liberty and democracy, and the rule of law enshrined in our Constitution.
We love our families and respect our neighbors.
We care for our sick, our poor, and our elderly.
We educate our children.
We believe in honesty and integrity, cooperation, fiscal responsibility, and sound business judgment.
These are not obscure ideas. You do not need a college education or a willingness to slog through policy papers to understand these values. They are intuitive to all Americans.
These American Values are my bedrock. I believe that President Bush and the Republicans in Congress have abandoned these values, and with your help, I intend to bring them back.
