Welcome Back Tim

I have been looking forward to this day for eight months. My friend Tim Johnson is returning to the Senate. It will be great seeing him back at work and having one more vote in the Democratic caucus.

Last week, in his first public appearance since falling ill in December, Tim showed us all his strength, character and courage. It is amazing that only eight months after surgery he is returning to his Senate schedule, including service on five committees.

In honor of his first day back in the Senate, help me welcome Tim with a contribution to his campaign by clicking here.

It's still early in the cycle, but Republicans are already on the run.

South Dakota is one of the few places where they believe they have the opportunity to pick up a seat in the Senate. Tim Johnson is incredibly popular at home, but we all know what happens when Republicans get desperate.

In 2002, the same year that Tim won reelection by just 524 votes, Republicans ran ads against Max Cleland, who lost three limbs for his country, comparing him to Osama Bin Laden. I expect, with their backs against the wall, they will try to do the same thing to Tim. We need to make sure he has the resources in place to win.

Help me welcome Tim back to the Senate. Make a contribution to his campaign by clicking here.

Welcome, yes. Money? No.

I work with patients who've suffered from the kind of brain injury that Senator Johnson experienced, and understand how difficult and lengthy the recovery can be.

I'm glad, for him and his family, that he is able to resume his duties.

However, since Senator Johnson also voted in favor of the abominable resolution "condemning" Moveon.org for it's newspaper ad criticizing the political general, I will not donate a single penny to his campaign, now or in the future.

I will only support democratic office holders who stand up for what's right; and candidates who challenge those who don't.

This illustrates the quandary the Democrats are in. The GOP still has the power to mobilize the media over a wedge issue like a newspaper ad while holding reality at bay in Iraq and planning the next war in Iran. At some point the Democrats will have to make a stand that they can win that is more than symbolic and that is a break with business as usual. The GOP is still governing as if they had won in 2006, and the Democrats don’t seem to be doing much about it.

What else is new?

The whole problem right now with the Democrats is that they are continuing to waste time on trivia (like voting to condemn MoveOn, going after Rush Limbaugh, etc.). This is all a part of the same sideshow and feeds right into Republican strategy. Until the "leadership" of the Democratic party wakes up and starts focussing on the real issues, don't expect anything to change.

Happy for Tim
By Arcade, Oct 5, 2007 at 4:05:04 PM ET
I'm happy that Tim's on the mend and back at work for the White Hats. Thing is, I'm distraught that he voted against MoveOn - who were exercizing their First Amendment rights, while soldiers continue to die in a futile effort to cover Bush's ass. Cover his ass and keep the feeding trough open for the no-bid contractor buddies of his as well.
It's time for Tim and his cohorts to unify into one solid and impenetrable mass of determination to cut the debt-sucking imbilicle cord to Dub's war/democracy garden/Al Quida lure/security bufferzone/WMD repository/whatever the next excuse is, debacle!
Even the Repukes in Congress could enjoy a better approval rating than Dub, if they'd JUST STOP THE LUNACY IN IRAQ!!!

Dodd

Why is Reid not going to honor Dodd's hold on the FISA bill? When are the dems going to stand up against this government spying on its own citizens? WHEN??????

Yes, I would like to know the logic to the FISA Bill too. He won't stand up and impeach Bush, but yet when Bush demands him to Bow to his will he does. So he conspires with Bush to cover up for him and the big telcom businesses, and then vows to fight Chris Dodd against what is right. Are all the Democrats on the Take? Give the Democratic Party Hell Harry! Because with you and Nancy as leaders that is the way it feels.

That makes three of us! When are the Democrats going to get a backbone and stand up for the American people instead of corporate lobbyist? WHEN, WHEN I ask??? The Democratic party is about to lose another one of their constituents, but you all don't care right?

Harry, where do you stand on FISA bill and why have you taken this action? Did you lose your copy of the constitution? You can borrow my copy.
