Sharron Angle on Social Security: Lying Then or Lying Now?
“The idea of privatizing and getting out of Medicare and Social Security is not up for grabs.” –Sharron Angle, KNPR, 5/19/2010
Yesterday, most major news outlets called out Sharron Angle for the revamped Social Security language that her new DC handlers have trained her to deliver. Bottom line: Sharron Angle is the savior.
Far from being the staunch advocate for Social Security’s complete elimination – a central tenet of her primary campaign and something she has supported consistently throughout her entire political career – Sharron Angle’s operatives launched a media offensive to portray Angle as the potential rescuer of the very program she has uncompromisingly denounced until now.
This newfound zeal for Social Security is particularly disingenuous given that Sharron Angle is on the record voicing her opposition to government programs like it as violations of the First Commandment, even claiming they’re emblematic of a nation “entrenched in idolatry”.
The truth – as we celebrate Social Security’s 75th anniversary – is that if Sharron Angle had her way there would be no 76th.
Ultimately though, yesterday’s efforts by Angle’s new operatives to rewrite history regarding her plans to eliminate the entire Social Security apparatus were an epic failure:
· Ralston: It became a political problem and now she’s saying something “completely different”
· Sharron Angle won’t answer direct questions on Social Security position, has been “studying” the issue
· TV ad regarding Angle’s position on Social Security received an “F” on non-partisan “Truth Test”
· Brutal for Angle: forthright liberal Rachel Maddow litigates the back-and-forth – using all relevant media clips – and concludes thusly:
“Totally broken, can't be fixed, kind of like Sharron Angle's campaign to erase her record and put on the moderate Republican suit that someone knitted for her in Washington.”
Bottom line: As Nevadans have begun to understand who Sharron Angle is and what she’s for, they’re rejecting her extreme and dangerous agenda – an agenda that includes killing Social Security and Medicare, abolishing the Department of Education, and eliminating any and all oversight of Wall Street and big oil companies like BP. (If BP had no regulations, they assuredly would have been more careful and we wouldn’t even be talking about this oil spill nonsense…)
Sharron Angle’s own words can’t be concealed by words her DC handlers now put in her mouth.
