Rhoads Endorses Reid: Reid is only candidate who can protect what matters most to rural Nevada
Long-time Rural Nevada State Senator Highlights Reid’s work for Ranching and Mining and contrasts with Angle’s “out-of-touch positions”
LAS VEGAS – Today, long-time Republican State Senator Dean Rhoads’s letter endorsing Senator Harry Reid for reelection ran in the Elko Daily Free Press. Rhoads, a rancher, has served in the state Senate since 1985, and served in the Assembly from 1977 to 1981.
Here is his endorsement in full:
"Rural Nevada's economy is built on two legs, ranching and mining. During my years in the Nevada State Legislature I have been proud to fight for both of these industries.
"The strength of our rural economy, though, depends on much more than what we can do at the local or state level. Having effective and reasonable partners in Washington, D.C. is critical. Almost 90 percent of Nevada's lands are managed by the federal government and the actions of Congress affect our communities disproportionately.
"This is why we need someone in the U.S. Senate who can protect the two legislative pillars that rural Nevada depends on: the Taylor Grazing Act and the 1872 Mining Law. While many Democrats would like to end grazing on public lands and slap a huge royalty on hard rock mining, Harry Reid is not one of them. As Majority Leader of the United States Senate he puts an end to proposals like these before they ever catch flight.
"Now, I certainly do not agree with everything that Senator Reid does. Health care reform was a mistake and the estate tax needs to be fixed.
"But despite these differences, the choice we face on November 2 is clear. We can support Senator Reid and keep rural Nevada’s key industries humming, or we can choose someone whose out-of-touch positions and lack of seniority are sure to put Nevada’s interests on the sidelines.
"Another factor to consider is that while the Republican Party is poised to retake the House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate will remain under the control of Democrats after the election. If Harry Reid is no longer in office, the next Senate leader will be Chuck Schumer, a vicious liberal from New York City. You may not like everything Harry Reid stands for, but I can guarantee you that Chuck Schumer cannot find Elko or Ely on a map. And as an East Coast liberal he has no reason to care about grazing, our public lands or the mining industry.
"This year the choice is simple. Senator Reid is the only candidate in the race who has the ability to protect what matters most to rural Nevada. I voted for him. I hope you will consider doing the same.
Rhoads' endorsement, first reported by political columnist Jon Ralston, was previewed on the Free Press website yesterday, but ran in the print edition today.
