Reid Campaign Releases TV Ads On Clean Energy Jobs

Reid leads the way in building these new Nevada industries, Angle dismisses tens of thousands of new jobs with derision

LAS VEGAS – Today, the Reid campaign released two new television advertisements to begin airing today that highlight Nevada Senator Harry Reid’s proven track record and commitment to ensuring our state leads the nation in clean energy.  His work to build this industry is putting Nevadans back to work, breaking our dependence on oil and helping to diversify Nevada's economy.

The first ad features Tim Gardner, a previously unemployed Nevadan who now works at Copper Mountain Solar – one of the largest solar facilities in the country -- thanks to the jobs created by the solar tax credits passed by Senator Reid.  The Solar Energy Industries Association says the solar tax credits passed by Senator Reid will create 41,000 clean energy jobs in Nevada alone.

“A few months ago I didn’t have a job, and now that’s all changed.  It was like a ton of bricks lifted off my shoulders,” Gardner says in the ad.  “These solar jobs wouldn’t be here without Harry Reid.  It’s that simple.”

The second ad highlights Paul Thomsen, a technician at Ormat Technologies, one of the Nevada geothermal companies that benefitted from the $144 million Senator Reid secured for Nevada geothermal projects as part of the Economic Recovery Act.

“As you drive along I-80, and you see the steam coming up from the ground, it may not look like much, but it’s geothermal energy,” begins the ad. “Geothermal can mean over sixteen thousand construction jobs in Nevada.  Harry Reid saw the potential for geothermal energy before just about anyone else."

“It’s Nevada jobs.  It’s Nevada energy.  Senator Reid is making that happen.”

Both TV ads can be viewed at www.HarryReid.com.

“These ads put real Nevada faces on what Senator Reid is doing to ensure this state leads the nation in clean energy in order to create good paying jobs,” said Reid campaign manager Brandon Hall.  “As Majority Leader, he’s not afraid to stand up to Big Oil companies to break our dependence on foreign oil and invest in Nevada’s future.

“Unfortunately, Sharron Angle is so extreme on energy issues, it’s dangerous for Nevada.  She wants to let Big Oil companies run wild without any regulation, ship nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain, and eliminate the Department of Energy.”

BACKGROUND ON SENATOR REID’S CLEAN ENERGY TRACK RECORD

Senator Reid is leading the charge to ensure Nevada takes advantage of its abundant natural resources like solar, wind and geothermal to lead the nation in clean energy.

He passed solar energy tax credits that will create 41,000 Nevada jobs.

He secured more than $300 million of the Economic Recovery Act for Nevada-based clean energy projects, including:

  • The funding for a brand new clean energy transmission line between White Pine to Clark counties that is creating thousands of good paying jobs.
  • $138 million to replace every electric meter in Nevada with a smart meter to reduce energy bills and promote savings.

BACKGROUND ON SHARRON ANGLE’S EXTREME, DANGEROUS VIEWS ON ENERGY

Sharron Angle has dismissed the potential of clean energy technologies like solar and geothermal to be tapped to make Nevada a national leader in clean energy production and create jobs, deriding the source of the tens of thousands of jobs referenced in the new TV spots as “designer” energy sources.

Angle Calls Solar, Wind, Geothermal Energy “Designer” Energy Resources. “We have some resources that are very untapped in this state. We could become an energy provider for the country, and I’m not just talking about the designer energy resources like solar, wind, geothermal, those kinds of things. We know that there’s a cost-effective break there that hasn’t quite been reached with technology, but nuclear is a real possibility for our state.” [Angle Town Hall Meeting, 9/1/2009]

Angle’s preference for massive expansion of nuclear energy over new, cutting-edge clean energy technologies being delivered by Sen. Reid should come as no surprise. Angle is hell-bent on transporting America’s nuclear waste across Nevada’s highways and through our communities to reprocess it at Yucca Mountain.

Astonishingly, Angle also supports further deregulation of the oil industry in the wake of the Gulf oil spill, suggesting we should let oil companies like BP expand their drilling operations under a regime of even less regulation than existed before the spill -- now seen as the greatest environmental catastrophe in American history.  It also means that none of those jobs would actually come to Nevada, as opposed to creating clean energy jobs that will improve the economy and benefit Nevadans looking for work.

Angle: In wake of Gulf spill, we need to "deregulate" Big Oil. According to the Washington Post “Angle said in a recent interview that the Gulf spill was an ‘accident’ and opined that we need to further ‘deregulate’ the oil industry in the wake of the disaster. Here's the exchange, from a Nevada Newsmakers interview on May 26th, more than a month into the spill crisis:

QUESTION: You have been in support of onshore drilling in the United States as well as offshore drilling, are you rethinking that policy with what is going on in Louisiana?

ANGLE: No. I think that what happened in Louisiana was an accident. They're cleaning it up. We need to go forward and talk about prevention and not about whether we keep it out all together. ... How do we deregulate enough to invite our industries to come back into the United States and quit outsourcing their business?  [WaPo, PlumLine, 6/9/10]

Angle Energy Plan: “Drill, Baby, Drill.” During a January 25, 2010 radio interview on KOH’s Bill Manders Show, Sharron Angle told listeners her energy plan was “‘Drill, Baby, Drill.’ -- Drill here, drill now. We need to open up and deregulate our coastlines, ANWAR, those kinds of things where we have not allowed our coal industry or our natural gas industry to expand.  But beyond that, we need to be really forward looking into nuclear.” [KOH, Bill Manders Show, 01/25/2010]

Angle’s Far-Right Energy Policy Per Her Website: Deregulate, Drill. According to Sharron Angle’s website, “As a long-term policy, America must expand its own domestic energy supplies. Sharron Angle would legislate to repeal regulations that prohibit off shore drilling, drilling in ANWR and development of American owned petroleum resources.” [Sharron Angle website, accessed 6/6/2010]
