NEW TV AD: Sharron Angle’s Extreme and Dangerous Agenda on Education

Angle opposed emergency aid to keep 1,400 Nevada jobs off the chopping block, would eliminate Department of Education entirely

LAS VEGAS – The Reid campaign today released a new TV ad highlighting the extreme and dangerous views held by Republican Sharron Angle on education. Angle and her new DC handlers have attempted to avoid the topic of education and their candidate’s radical agenda that would decimate public schools, further undermining Nevada’s already-struggling system.

As Nevada students prepare to go back to school, at least 1,400 education jobs are no longer on the chopping block thanks to $83 million in emergency funding Sen. Reid delivered to our state. While even Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons was happy to accept the much-needed federal aid, Sharron Angle opposed it.

In fact Angle – who has famously argued that it’s not the job of a US Senator to fight for Nevadans’ jobs – said the potential loss of 1,400 education jobs was an “emergency only in Harry Reid’s mind” and referred to the funds for teachers as a giveaway to “special interests.”

The even more extreme and dangerous part of Sharron Angle’s agenda – complete abolition of the Department of Education – would devastate Nevada schoolchildren and teachers in every age and category. Under Angle’s plan, Nevada schools would have lost more than $225 million in direct funding for secondary and elementary education. Moreover, the Department of Education were eliminated, Nevada students would have lost more than $415 million in college loans. That includes $80 million annually in Pell grants alone, which 30,000 Nevada students utilized during the 2008-2009 school year.

“The fact that Sharron Angle would have left 1,400 education jobs here in Nevada on the chopping block, and spent days in public with her new DC handlers belittling the emergency funding Sen. Reid secured to save those jobs, should tell voters everything they need to know about her extreme plans to gut public education in our state,” said Reid campaign spokesman Kelly Steele. “Angle’s radical plans to eliminate the Department of Education would cost Nevada college students more than $500 million in financial aid like Pell grants, and hundreds of millions for our state's elementary and secondary schools – all at a time when our students can least afford such draconian cuts.”

BACKGROUND ON ANGLE’S EXTREME EDUCATION AGENDA

ANGLE OPPOSED $83 MILLION IN FUNDING TO SAVE 1,400 EDUCATION JOBS IN NEVADA

Reid Passed Legislation Providing $83 Million In Funding To Save 1,400 Education Jobs In Nevada. In August 2010, the Review-Journal reported, “Senate Democrats on Wednesday defeated a Republican filibuster and cleared a path for a $26 billion bill to rescue cash-starved states contemplating layoffs to teachers and other public employees. For Nevada, the legislation promises $83 million to bolster school budgets and $79 million to cushion a shortfall in state spending on health care for the poor, said Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.” According to the Department of Education, the funding would save approximately 1,400 Nevada education jobs. [Review-Journal, 8/4/10; Department of Education, Education Jobs Estimates, 7/6/10]

Angle On Saving 1,400 Education Jobs: “The Emergency Is Only In Harry Reid's Mind.” During an August 2010 interview with Andrew Napolitano and Michelle Bachmann on Fox Business News, Angle agreed with Rep. Bachmann when she said funding to save education jobs was “money laundering,” saying, “Well I think the emergency is only in Harry Reid's mind as Michele put so succinctly. This is an emergency for the Democrats, it is a way to solidify their base if you will with our taxpayer dollars. I say no, Nevada voters are much wiser than that, they know that this emergency is only in Harry Reid's mind.” [Fox Business News, 8/9/10]

Angle Called Saving Education Jobs A Giveaway To "Special Interests.” During an August 2010 interview with Roger Hedgecock, Angle said, “He has promoted the stimulus plans, and now he’s wanting to promote another one as an emergency act. All it is, is really promoting money to his special interest groups – those unions – and what is going to do to Nevada is this stimulus new bill is going to take money out of Medicaid and food stamps instead of hiring… he wants to hire teachers and our population has gone down so much that we don’t have those jobs for teachers anymore because of what Harry Reid has been doing. I mean we could just go on and on with the poor public policy that he has been promoting. And it’s all for Harry Reid; it has nothing to do with Nevada.” [The Roger Hedgecock Show, 8/9/10]

ANGLE WANTS TO ELIMINATE THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Angle On The Department Of Education: “I Would Go Through To The Elimination. During a May interview on KNPR’s State of Nevada, Angle was asked:

Host: Would you eliminate the Department of Education or simply cut it back?

Angle: I would like to go through to the elimination. We start by defunding it, and the reason that we should eliminate it is because it’s not the federal government’s job to provide education for our children… [KNPR, State of Nevada, 5/19/10]

Angle: “I Am For Abolishing The Department Of Education.” In the June 10, 2010, edition of her campaign’s “Angle Examiner,” Angle addresses her stance on the Department of Education:

Q. Why do you want to eliminate the Department of Education?

A. As a former teacher and grandmother of ten, nobody is more committed to educating our children than I am.  I simply don’t believe that that is best accomplished via unfunded mandates from bureaucrats in Washington. I believe that education decisions are best made at the state and local level by parents and teachers who are invested in the lives of the children whom they have been tasked with teaching.  Rather than have a gigantic government department that has failed our kids time and again, I would rather put that money as close to the state and local level as possible.  That’s why I am for abolishing the Department of Education. [The Angle Examiner, 6/10/2010]

Angle In Her Own Words: “The Federal Department Of Education Should Be Eliminated.” According to Sharron Angle’s website, she “believes that the Federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” [Sharron Angle Website, accessed 6/15/10]

Angle Said She Would Eliminate Departments Of Education And Energy, The EPA. In a March 2010 e-interview with Nevada News and Views, Angle was asked, “Is there a Federal department/cabinet position you would support eliminating?” Angle answered, “Yes. There are several Federal departments that are not covered by the Constitutional Federal enumerated powers clause and should be given back to the states per the Tenth amendment. Those cuts should include the Department of Education, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, IRS code, audit the FED leading to cuts, National Endowment of the Arts, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, Planned Parenthood funding, funding of czars and more. I include these cuts in my economic policy for taking back our government.” [Nevada News and Views, 3/22/10]

Conservative Republican Senators Say Eliminating Department Of Education “Doesn’t Make Sense.” According to a June article in Politico, “Sharron Angle may quickly find that some of her more controversial views won’t fly in the Senate GOP Conference if she becomes Nevada’s next senator – even with some of the most conservative Republicans in the upper chamber…Small government conservatives said it doesn’t make sense to eliminate the Energy and Education departments – as she’s called for in the past.” [Politico, 6/15/10]
