Must-See TV: NOLA Mayor Rips Angle’s Katrina Comments, Angle Doubles Down

In a report this afternoon on KLAS-TV, New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu ripped into Republican US Senate candidate Sharron Angle over her extreme and callous remarks opposing all federal aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Landrieu called Angle’s remarks “offensive” and “cold-hearted” and offered his thoughts on her fitness to serve in the US Senate thusly:

“It really makes you pause for a second and wonder whether you are dealing with somebody that's rational and thoughtful and can somehow balance principle with the need for compassion.”

Almost unbelievably, Angle’s response was to double down on questioning the wisdom of spending taxpayer dollars to provide relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, suggesting a full five years after the worst natural disaster in American history that Sen. Reid – and presumably the other 96 senators on the top of the 97-0 vote – had made a poor decision on the use of taxpayer dollars, reiterating the exact same statement opposing Katrina aid about “government living within its means” that set off the current firestorm of criticism.

The New Orleans mayor’s most recent comments follow a sharp rebuke earlier today in the Times-Picayune where Landrieu said:

“When I heard Sharron Angle’s comments about how she would have opposed helping victims of Hurricane Katrina, I honestly wondered aloud how anyone like this could actually be serious about wanting to serve in the United States Senate.” […]

“From her indifference to the suffering after Hurricane Katrina to siding with foreign oil companies like BP over her fellow Americans, Sharron Angle has proven that she is simply too extreme and dangerous to serve in the United States Senate.

While seemingly heartless, Angle’s blind opposition to Katrina relief shouldn’t come as a surprise.  In the Nevada Assembly, her blind obstructionism earned her the dubious distinction of vote tallies coming to be known as “41 to Angle” and Angle has already insulted victims of the BP oil spill in the Gulf by calling the $20 billion private escrow account set up by the company a “slush fund.”
