Medicare’s 45th Anniversary: Sharron Angle’s Agenda? Kill the Whole Program
Angle says to “phase out” Medicare entirely, holds extreme belief that federal role in Medicare is unconstitutional
LAS VEGAS – According to Sharron Angle, the federal government undertook an egregious violation of the US Constitution exactly forty five years ago today. But for the hundreds of millions of seniors who have benefited from one of the most successful safety nets in American history, today is a day of celebration – the 45thanniversary of the inception of Medicare.
That’s correct – Sharron Angle believes that Medicare is unconstitutional.
Angle’s extreme and dangerous agenda for Medicare was revealed at a September 2009 campaign event. Questioning the legitimacy of prescription drug benefits for seniors under Medicare, Angle went a step further, stating:
“I’m not sure just where in the Constitution the federal government is even supposed to be involved in our Medicare. You know, these are things that could be done on the state level much better.”

(Recall that Angle invokes the Constitution as the prime motivator of her actions as a public servant, despite her promotion of “2nd Amendment remedies” and her declaration that separation of church and state is “unconstitutional.”)
In addition to Angle’s extreme belief that Medicare is unconstitutional, she has also been completely upfront about her agenda to kill the program entirely. Like Social Security, Angle has declared Medicare a federal program that she would “phase out” entirely and, when pressed about specifics, said: “The idea of privatizing and getting out of Medicare and Social Security is not up for grabs.”
Angle’s view on Medicare has been unwavering since her entry into the race, declaring bluntly in her first interview with the Review-Journal in 2009:“We need to phase it out.”
“Sharron Angle literally believes Medicare – a program that has helped hundreds of millions of seniors in need – is unconstitutional and should be eliminated,” said Kelly Steele, spokesman for the Reid campaign. “Sharron Angle can add as many DC handlers as she’d like, but she can’t escape her extreme and dangerous agenda to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, make Nevada America’s nuclear dumping ground, and explain to ‘spoiled’ Nevadans looking for work that she wants to cut off unemployment benefits.”
