Key News From the US Senate Race: None of Which You’d Read in the Review-Journal

As Sharron Angle continues her blackout of all Nevada media in the face of the racially-charged remarks for which she refuses to answer, the weekend papers are chock-full of stories about the US Senate race and the key issues in its final days. Instead of examining important relevant developments, the Review-Journal again shamelessly used its Sunday edition to disseminate anti-Reid, pro-Angle propaganda heading into the final week of early vote. Today’s coverage by the Review-Journal makes it clear that they understand the same thing Nevadans do—Sharron Angle is losing this race because mainstream Nevadans are rejecting her extreme agenda.

Perhaps the key story from the weekend coverage is an extensive piece on the importance of keeping Sen. Reid as Majority Leader to ensure the permanent closure of Yucca Mountain, entitled “Yucca Future Rides on Senate Race.” A critical economic and safety issue in Nevada for decades, the Reno Gazette-Journal examines the near-certainty of a revived dump at Yucca Mountain without the political clout of Sen. Reid. The piece quotes former Republican mayor Bruce Breslow of Sparks and UNR political science professor Eric Herzik, respectively, on the absolute necessity of maintaining Reid’s leadership:

Breslow: “Our entire Nevada delegation has opposed Yucca, but we had no clout until Senator Reid became majority leader. […] It's the clout of the position of majority leader that has prevented Nevada from being the country's nuclear dumping ground.”

Herzik: “Without a powerful member of Congress from Nevada, the Silver State would once again become vulnerable to a push from other states' lawmakers who want to send their nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain”

Another critical story in the race is the recent endorsements of Sen. Reid by rural Republicans, arguing he’s the last best hope to protect jobs in rural Nevada – something Sharron Angle would be both unable and unwilling to do. The Las Vegas Sun has an extensive piece today on the prominent Republicans backing Sen. Reid, including Northern Nevada Republican mayors that have campaigned extensively on his behalf, and the recent endorsement of State Sen. Dean Rhoads, who penned an op-ed in the Elko Daily Free Press Friday arguing Reid was the right choice for one single reason – jobs, jobs, jobs. In this Angle stronghold, Rhoads told the Sun he’s actively campaigning for Reid, and has “changed a lot of votes talking to people.”

Meanwhile, the shameless propaganda from the Review-Journal continues unabated, with an especially egregious slate of weekend coverage. Today’s edition includes four separate staff-written editorials, two “news” pieces designed to make Reid look unfavorable, and an editorial cartoon in based on marginally contextual remarks, twisted by the Angle campaign and right-wing bloggers. Ranging from despicable, unsubstantiated shots at Sen. Reid’s health by publisher Sherm Frederick to “news” analysis of Sen. Reid’s voting record that is littered with sources debunking their headline/desired narrative to a “news” piece with an intentionally-misleading headline and analysis ignoring the total votes cast by burying mention of absentee ballots that actually give Democrats a turnout edge, the Review-Journal continues its seemingly never-ending effort to take journalistic standards and editorial content to a new low each week. With just one weekend’s coverage left in this critical race, they’ve certainly set a high (low) bar to clear in the final coming days.
