BREAKING VIDEO: ANGLE CAMPAIGN TRASHES LAS VEGAS STRIP; CREDITS REID WITH SAVING CITYCENTER

Angle Spokeswoman: “We just know that Harry Reid called a bank and suddenly they were giving money to CityCenter”

LAS VEGAS -- Sharron Angle is at it again.  This time her spokeswoman Ciara Matthews not only gave Sen. Harry Reid credit for picking up the phone and saving 22,000 jobs at CityCenter (something Angle said she would not do), she trashed the importance of tourism jobs on the Las Vegas Strip.

Yes, we know, it’s unbelievable, so watch the unedited story from KLAS-TV for yourself.

Nearly 100,000 people work on the Las Vegas Strip; and while the actual name of the street is Las Vegas Boulevard, and not “Main Street”, those jobs are important and tourism is the lifeblood of Nevada’s economy.  In fact, according to the Nevada Resort Association, revenue from the industry makes up “nearly half of the total general fund tax revenue collected by the state annually,” which funds things like education and emergency services.  As we have seen, when tourism loses business because the national economy is suffering, our entire state is affected.  Sen. Reid believes that strengthening tourism is key to strengthening our economy.

As for this gem from the Angle campaign: "What about the rest of Nevada? CityCenter may be beneficial for Las Vegas, that may be the case, but what about the rest of Nevada? We've got Ely, which doesn't have a CityCenter that Harry Reid called and saved, or called a big bank and tried to influence their lending decisions."

Well, in fact, Sen. Reid has helped create jobs in Ely and throughout rural Nevada.  In fact, just this week, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved plans for a transmission line to be built between White Pine County and Clark County.  This line will be financed because of a provision Sen. Reid inserted in the stimulus bill, and will lead to the creation of 400 construction jobs and thousands of indirect jobs, mostly in rural Nevada.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Angle has disrespected Nevada’s hospitality workers.  During a town hall in 2009, Angle ridiculed those who work in the industry, saying they perform tasks “Americans won’t do.”

“When it comes to over-the-top rhetoric, Sharon Angle really takes the cake.  When she’s not talking about ‘Second Amendment’ remedies or telling rape victims to make lemonade out of lemons, she’s insulting the people who are the lifeblood of our state’s economy,” said Reid spokesman Jon Summers.  “Whether you’re talking about workers on the Strip, ranchers in rural Nevada or miners in Elko, Sharron Angle clearly doesn’t get that it is a senator’s job to fight for the entire state, something Sen. Reid does every day.”

BACKGROUND ON ANGLE’S COMMENTS ABOUT HOSPITALITY WORKERS

Angle Ridiculed Nevada Families Who Work In The Hospitality Industry, Saying They Perform Tasks “Americans Don’t Do.” In a September 2009 town hall meeting Sharron Angle said, “My father bought a small business out in front of the convention center in Reno… a motel…we did those things as a kid growing up that Americans don’t do. We cleaned bathrooms and made beds and swept floors, did laundry, those kinds of things.” Angle later repeated her sentiment at a Las Vegas candidate forum, telling the crowd, “We did those jobs Americans don’t do. We cleaned bathrooms, and made beds and swept floors and hung out laundry, because that was the lifeblood of our family.” [Angle Town Hall, 9/1/2009; Sun City Forum, 2/5/2010]

Nevada Casino Executive Sue Lowden Wrote Blog Post Slamming Angle’s Comment; Nevada Hispanic Caucus Decried Her Remark. In a May 26, 2010 blog post, Sue Lowden wrote, “What?  ‘That Americans don’t do’?  There are no Americans cleaning bathrooms, making beds, sweeping floors and doing laundry in Nevada’s casinos and resorts? Or was Sharron suggesting that the large number of first- and second-generation immigrant-Americans who toil in Nevada’s hospitality industry aren’t ‘real’ Americans?  Or was she trying to infer that all of these jobs are being filled by illegal aliens?” [Sue Lowden blog post, 5/26/2010]

Nevada Hispanic Caucus: “Her Demeaning And Discriminatory Rhetoric Indicates Sharron Angle’s Disrespect For The Majority Of Hardworking Nevadans.” In a May 2010 statement, the Nevada Hispanic Caucus said, “We at the Nevada Hispanic Caucus are offended and appalled at the comments made by U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle, inferring custodial work is something ‘Americans don’t do.’  Her demeaning and discriminatory rhetoric indicates Sharron Angle’s disrespect for the majority of hardworking Nevadans.
