Angle Anti-gaming Backers Threaten Nevada’s “Lifeblood Gambling Industry”

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf has endorsed Sen. Harry Reid’s re-election bid, saying that Sharron Angle’s election would be a threat to our state’s “lifeblood gambling industry.” According to a new report by the Associated Press, Angle is being backed by the anti-gaming Campaign For Working Families, run by right-wing extremist former presidential candidate Gary Bauer.

According to the report, the organization has endorsed Sharron Angle, and has begun running TV ads attacking Sen. Reid on her behalf. Said Fahrenkopf on Angle’s acceptance of support from someone completely hell-bent on destroying Nevada’s top industry:

“It's disturbing that she (Angle) is taking money from people who oppose gambling. […] Gary Bauer has been a longtime, outspoken opponent of legalized gambling. I did a double-take when I read she was receiving assistance from someone who has opposed Nevada's chief industry for so long.”

The report notes industry leaders warn of Angle’s election to the Senate, given Sen. Reid’s knowledge of gaming issues and his ability to protect the industry in his position as majority leader. They specifically note that these tough economic times make Reid’s leadership role more crucial than ever, given that assaults by Angle’s backers at Campaign for Working Families would only make a bad economic situation in Nevada worse.

As the story notes, the gravity of the situation is enormous, given that the leisure and hospitality industry, which includes hotel-casinos, is Nevada's largest employer, accounting for 304,300 jobs statewide.

As is the case with virtually every single important issue in the Nevada US Senate race, the AP notes that “The Angle campaign did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment.”
