Vegas Hopes To Gain From Job, Travel Bills
Fox 5, 2/24/2010 - LAS VEGAS -- The Senate’s passage of a highly anticipated jobs bill could go a long way toward helping Las Vegas overcome the worst unemployment crisis in recent memory.
At the same time, many are pinning their hopes on a Travel Promotion Act designed to boost tourism in America’s largest vacation destinations.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he hopes to pass the bill by next week. It would create a federal agency to promote tourism, and some analysts estimate as many as 6,000 jobs would be generated in Nevada.
Reid talked of the travel bill last week during President Barack Obama’s visit to Las Vegas. When asked by a furloughed U.S. Airways employee what was being done to recharge the travel industry, Obama passed the microphone to Reid, who talked of the need for the U.S. to advertise itself the way other countries do.
