UFC fighting champion endorses Reid

The Hill, 10/25/10 - The Senate race that spawned this year's most memorable campaign phrase, "Man up," added a very manly new endorsement this weekend.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hall-of-famer and RepublicanRandy Couture on Sunday endorsed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), calling Reid "a UFC fan and a former boxer who doesn’t give up when times are hard."

Couture is a six-time UFC heavyweight champion and a former Olympic wrestler. He fights out of Las Vegas, Nev., but resides primarily in Oregon. In 2008, he told the Baltimore Sun that he's been a Republican "since I've been old enough to vote."

In a statement released by Reid's office, Couture says, "After 13 years competing in the UFC, I know what it takes to be a fighter. And I know no one is more dedicated or capable of fighting for Nevada families than Senator Harry Reid. Sen. Reid is also a UFC fan and a former boxer who doesn’t give up when times are hard.

Couture also takes a swipe at Reid's opponent, Republican Sharron Angle, saying, "We don't have time to gamble on our future with Sharron Angle ... now is not the time to listen to risky promises about what might happen tomorrow. We demand guarantees now. "

Reid issued a response as part of the same press release. He thanked Couture for the endorsement and said, "I look forward to watching Randy fight again soon right here in Las Vegas.”

Couture isn't the only Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) star to have backed Reid's re-election bid. Couture's fellow UFC champion, Chuck Liddell, joined the senator last week for an early voting event. The UFC is headquartered in Las Vegas.
