Timothy Hay: ‘Smart from the Start’ plan is our solar-energy road map

Gazette Journal, 12/20/11 - Some things just go together: Salt and pepper. Mom and apple pie. Nevada and sunshine.

Nevada is blessed with more sunshine than any other state, and Nevada is becoming a leader in promoting and developing solar energy by building solar panels and installing them on homes and businesses. Utility-scale solar power projects and transmission lines are being developed that will bring that clean, renewable electricity to our communities. The solar industry is creating good jobs and providing a desperately needed boost to the state's economy.

Importantly, our state's leaders are seizing the initiative. State officials have been working with California Gov. Jerry Brown on regional renewable-energy marketing initiatives. The Legislature and Public Utility Commission are supporting renewable energy zones in the state, and Sen. Harry Reid is recognized as a national leader in similar efforts. And last year the Nevada Legislature adopted AB307, a pioneering program that provides dedicated funding for scientific studies to ensure that Nevada's lands and wildlife are protected during energy development.
