Nevada getting $23.4 million in federal money for schools

Las Vegas Sun, 4/16/10 - Nevada is getting $23.4 million in federal Recovery Act funds to help low-performing schools.

Rep. Shelley Berkley made the announcement this morning, saying the money will help some of Clark County's underperforming schools. The funds awarded to Nevada under the School Improvement Grants program will be distributed by the state to local school districts.

"Every Nevada child deserves a quality education and this funding will be targeted directly at improving schools that have consistently failed to meet required standards," Berkley said in a statement. "These young minds are one of Nevada’s greatest assets and steps must be taken to ensure that our schools are truly serving the educational needs of students in Las Vegas and across the state."

To apply for funds, a school district must have either a "persistently lowest achieving" or a Tier III school. Schools in Tier III have failed to meet annual yearly progress for two years, but are not identified as "persistently lowest achieving" schools, Berkley said.

Districts applying for funding must indicate they will implement one of four models to turn around low-performing schools.
