Nearly 300 ‘green’ jobs coming to Southern Nevada
My News 3, 7/20/10 - Senator Harry Reid announced Tuesday that solar energy company Amonix, Inc. has signed a lease for a new solar panel production plant in North Las Vegas.
"Amonix offers the perfect example of how the Recovery Act is helping Nevada businesses and the clean energy industry expand and thrive," Reid says.
Amonix produces concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) solar power systems that require no water in power production, use land better and produce more energy per acre than any other solar technology.
"Solar has come down to a point in cost where it's starting to be competitive for fossil fuels. Right now there is great demand for solar energy because of policy and because it's becoming cost competitive with fossil based generation like natural gas,” explains Brian Robertson, CEO of Amonix Inc.
The Amonix project in North Las Vegas will enhance the city's presence on a national scale for producing clean, renewable power.
"A lot of these jobs have gone overseas. These photovoltaic parts are coming from China; we want them to come from the United States. And we're excited that they're going to come from North Las Vegas,” says Mayor Shari Buck.
Senator Reid announced that 278 permanent green jobs will be coming to the Las Vegas valley at the new solar manufacturing plant.
"Nearly 300 Nevadans will find work in this developing industry that is diversifying our state's economy so that we won't fall victim to another economic downturn," Reid continues. "I'm pleased that Amonix has signed a lease and will be putting Nevadans to work this year."
