Notable local Republicans reach across the aisle

Rebel Yell, 10/11/10 - We know that it’s “politics as usual” in most political campaigns. Many voters are repulsed by these political games, explaining why so many of them are apathetic about the November elections.

Thankfully, some prominent local Republicans are breaking away from the norm (set by their national counterparts) of voting only along party lines. They are endorsing the better candidate without much regard for the fact that he’s a Democrat.

Over the last week, State Senator Bill Raggio, R-Nev., endorsed incumbent U.S. Senator and Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid in his race against challenger Sharron Angle.

When Angle called out Raggio and questioned his character in the media, former Clark County GOP Chair Jim Uster came out and defended Raggio’s reputation, chastising Angle for smearing him.

Most recently, Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents Vice Chairman Jason Geddes also came to Raggio’s defense, saying that Angle crossed the line with her comments. We are proud of him, as his ability to reach across the aisle will pay off when we are fighting the battle against more budget cuts.

In fact, we are proud of all local prominent Republicans who are not following in the footsteps of their national counterparts in sticking to party affiliation and ignoring the issues.

While they may not be completely satisfied with the work Reid has done for our state, local Republicans know
he is clearly the better choice in this race.

Raggio’s endorsement is welcome, as we all wish our leaders to endorse candidates based on their qualifications,
not their political affiliation. Endorsing Reid, even reluctantly, shows openmindedness in an environment
dominated by the “politics as usual” mentality.

We feel that Angle will be less effective in steering money to our state and that Reid’s power will allow him to better channel those funds to our state.

Nevada needs money and Reid can bring it in. Angle opposes the federal stimulus bill that Reid helped pass.

That stimulus bill aims to help states that are exactly in our current predicament.

Having a notable senator work tirelessly to bring us money can better Nevada financially.

Like Raggio, we feel that Angle is not the right candidate for Nevada, as she is not as experienced politically. But, of course, inexperience alone is not enough to disqualify a candidate.

In addition to being inexperienced, Angle also seems unprepared to represent Nevada. All her misspeaks and her
tendency to hide from the media only strengthens the claims that she will be a frail and vulnerable member of the Senate.

Her extreme views are unlikely to make her an effective and compromising senator.

It’s good to know that politicians from both ends of the aisle can see that.
