Harry Reid Fights to Repeal DADT, Republicans Obstruct

Earlier this afternoon, Senator Reid urged the Senate to repeal the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. He introduced legislation in the Defense Authorization Bill, but without the cooperation of a single Republican, he was unable to advance the bill. While it is very frustrating that Republicans have stalled this legislation, it is important to remember a few things:

Harry Reid is responsible for inserting the repeal of DADT into the Defense Bill. He is responsible for forcing the Senate to vote on repealing DADT. Harry Reid continues to fight, even after today's setback, to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" during this Congress.

Passage of this bill was delayed because of Republican obstructionism, plain and simple. Despite Republican excuses, their obstruction had nothing to do with amendments.  Today's vote was simply a vote to begin debate on the bill, which includes the amendment process.  By preventing us from even considering the bill, Republicans are blocking funding and a pay raise for our troops and their ability to introduce their own amendments. Republicans aren't just voting no on the DOD bill, they are literally refusing to even allow us to discuss the bill.

But today's setback isn't the end of our fight. We are closer than ever before to repealing "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and that's because of Harry Reid. This bill will pass, and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will be repealed during this Congress.

Text DADT to 42779 today and tell the Republicans to join Harry Reid and repeal DADT.

A note on Senate procedure:

Senator Reid supports repealing "Don't Ask Don't Tell." Today he switched his vote to "no" at the end of the vote simply because Senate rules allow him to bring the bill back to the floor by doing so. Senator Reid will urge the Senate to reconsider DADT, but in order to do so, Senate procedure required him to change his vote.
