Equal Pay for Equal Work
Sen. Reid has been a strong advocate for making sure women receive equal pay for equal work.
“There is no reason anyone should take home a paycheck different from his or her coworker's based solely on that worker's gender, race, age, ethnicity or disability. And in a historically weak economy such as ours, American families can no longer afford it.” - Senator Harry Reid
In fact, in January 2009 he led the Senate to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, calling the bill “a victory for American workers”. The bill would ensure that if a worker discovers disparities between his or her salary and another worker who performs the same work, the time in which that worker can take action resets with each unfair paycheck, rather than starting and ending after the first instance, whether the worker was aware of the disparity or not.
Sen. Reid is also championing the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would go even further than the Ledbetter legislation to provide more effective remedies for victims of wage discrimination based on gender. He has co-sponsored the legislation for more than a decade.
