REID HAS TIRELESSLY FOUGHT TO END THE SHAMEFUL PRACTICE OF DENYING DISABLED VETERANS THEIR FULL RETIREMENT PAY

Throughout his career in public service, Senator Reid has fought to ensure America’s veterans receive every single dime of the retirement benefits they have earned. It is simply unconscionable for those disabled in the service of their country to be denied what is owed to them.

Senator Reid revived legislation that would provide full benefits to disabled veterans who are forced to forgo a portion of their retirement pay in order to collect disability. Reid has made the reversal of this terrible policy a top priority, introducing numerous pieces of legislation since 2000.

His efforts standing up for disabled veterans have been widely recognized. In 2004, the American Legion presented Senator Reid with the “Unsung Hero” award in Congress for “commendable leadership on the issue of concurrent receipt of military retired pay and Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation for thousands of military retirees.”

And Senator Reid’s efforts are having an effect. In fact, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported:

“In 2003 Congress allowed veterans with at least a 50 percent disability rating to become eligible for full benefits over a 10-year phase-in period. In 2004 the phase-in was eliminated for veterans declared 100 percent disabled. In 2005 veterans classified by the VA as ‘unemployable’ were granted full benefits.

“Reid's latest legislation would declare all disabled veterans eligible for full disability and retirement payments.” [Review-Journal, 3/10/09]
