Sharron Angle’s “Screw You” Economics: Labor Day Edition
Angle’s new DC handlers can’t hide her extreme hostility to working Nevadans, her crass message to the unemployed, or her total indifference to creating jobs
LAS VEGAS – With Labor Day marking the traditional end-of-summer holiday weekend that begins the final sprint to the November 2nd election, all recent polling data suggests a growing majority of voters are rejecting Sharron Angle’s extreme and dangerous agenda for Nevada – including a whopping 66% of purported supporters and 80% of independents saying they wished Angle had lost in the primary. On this Labor Day, one must look no further than Angle’s extreme disregard for the needs of working families in Nevada to understand why.
One salient recent example – the jobs of 2,000 workers at McCarran Airport due to an Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) holiday secured by Sen. Reid. The issue has received little to no attention because of Angle’s media stonewalling. KLAS-TV’s Nathan Baca recently noted his repeated attempts to get an answer from Angle or her new DC handlers regarding Angle’s position on AMT. Despite Angle’s eagerness to push $600 billion in tax cuts for the Paris Hiltons of the world, Angle refuses to answer a simple question on the AMT. Perhaps saving thousands of airport and tourism jobs at McCarran Airport was an “emergency only in Harry Reid’s mind”???
But Angle’s antipathy towards the plight of working Nevadans is nothing new. In the state Assembly in 2005, Angle voted against increasing the minimum wage from a meager $5.15/hour for working Nevadans. Her hostility to increasing the minimum wage was shown to be far outside the mainstream in Nevada when, in 2006, voters approved a $1/hour hike via ballot initiative by a nearly 70-30% margin. By contrast, Sen. Reid has repeatedly supported increasing the minimum wage to help working families struggling to make ends meet.
Angle’s hostility towards working Nevadans has also become clear based on her infamous statements that out-of-work Nevadans are “spoiled” by their unemployment benefits, and that extension of emergency unemployment benefits in these extremely tough economic times “really doesn’t benefit anyone.” Angle has also stated repeatedly that it’s not her job as a US Senator to fight for the jobs of Nevadans, even if it means something as simple as picking up the phone to go to bat for the state’s largest private employer to save 22,000 jobs. When it comes to the economy, Sharron Angle’s policies have been billed by MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann as “Screw You” Economics.

“From her hostility to the minimum wage and workplace safety regulations, to her callous opposition to extending unemployment benefits that 'spoil' out-of-work Nevadans just trying to get by, Sharron Angle has demonstrated time and again that her extreme and dangerous agenda is far outside the mainstream in Nevada,” said Reid campaign spokesman Kelly Steele. “Most hypocritically, the relentlessly negative campaign of Sharron Angle’s new DC handlers is based on rooting for economic failure on behalf of a candidate who unabashedly states she would not fight for the jobs of hard-working Nevadans as a US Senator.”
