Sen. Reid Launches Veterans for Harry Reid

Reid Campaign Announces Endorsement By Former Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps

LAS VEGAS - Today, Senator Reid’s campaign launched Veterans for Harry Reid, a group of Nevada veterans supporting Senator Reid for his proven track record standing up for America’s men and women in uniform. Coordinated by a Steering Committee of retired military personnel from across the state, the group will play a critical advisory role on veterans’ issues and work to get former Nevada service members involved in the campaign.

Veterans have been rallying behind Senator Reid’s re-election campaign. In fact, today Friends for Harry Reid announced the endorsement of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps John L. Estrada (ret.), the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Marine Corps.

"Senate Majority Leader Reid continues to be a champion on veterans' issues and I am proud to support him in the same way he has always supported those who have worn the uniform,” said Sgt. Major Estrada.

“Nevada veterans simply do not have a stronger ally in Congress than Sen. Reid, a fact that he has proven every time he delivers for those who have served this nation,” said US Army Officer Tom Baker (ret.), Nevada veteran and member of the Veterans for Harry Reid Steering Committee.

“I am so grateful for the strong support my campaign is receiving from Sergeant Major Estrada and Nevada’s veterans community,” said Senator Reid. “After putting their lives on the line for our country, we must honor their service by making sure they have access to health care, can afford to go to college, and receive the retirement and disability benefits they have earned. I remain committed to ensuring that the voices of Nevada’s veterans are always heard in the United States Senate.”

The launch of Veterans for Reid will be accompanied by a new Facebook page and a section of the web site to keep veterans up-to-date on campaign-related issues and news. Nevada veterans can join Veterans for Harry Reid by clicking here.

Senator Reid has a strong track record as a strong advocate for the veterans community. As Majority Leader, he made passage of the 21st Century GI Bill one of his top priorities, an initiative that is giving hundreds of thousands of service men and women new education and employment opportunities. He has championed legislation to protect the retirement benefits of disabled veterans, even receiving the American Legion’s “Unsung Hero” award for his tireless work. Furthermore, Senator Reid has worked to improve Nevada’s VA hospital system, securing more than $600 million for a new VA hospital in Nevada to be completed by 2012.
