Washoe Sheriff’s Office gets $1 million federal grant

Reno Gazette-Journal, 10/13/10 - The U.S. Department of Justice is awarding the Washoe County Sheriff's Office a $1 million grant to assist in anti-terrorism efforts.

The money will pay for a mobile command center that provides equipment and technology for coordinating emergency response efforts and sharing information. The command center will be available to all local agencies during an emergency.

Grant funding also will provide money for an in-car video system for the sheriff's patrol division. The system will bring 60 in-car cameras to deputies.

Digital video units mounted in police vehicles have proven to be successful in capturing video footage as evidence in a wide range of law enforcement responses. Examples include homicide and DUI cases, vehicle pursuits, accidents and officer-involved shootings.
