Public option is a cost-cutting necessity
Letter to the Editor: "..we need the #publicoption to provide competition to bring down costs." #hcr
Las Vegas Sun, 08-30-09 — Sen. Harry Reid’s support for a public option, which would be part of health care reform, is welcome news. Those opposing reform do not seem to realize that, because of mergers and consolidation, there are very few health insurance companies participating in the national market, and fewer still functioning in Nevada.
If we are truly going to provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans, we need the public option to provide competition to bring down costs. The option of doing nothing will lead to higher individual and group health care costs. This is particularly acute for those who are self-employed and cannot otherwise afford health insurance.
