Harry Reid announces $2.3 million in funding for Nevada earthquake scientists

Reno Gazette-Journal, 02/03/2010 - The Nevada Seismological Laboratory has received $2.3 million to continue participating in the Advanced National Seismic System for another five years, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid’s office has announced...

What’s new this time is that there is money included to expand the use of global positioning systems in earthquake monitoring, Kent said. In the past GPS has been used to measure shifts in plates over longer times. The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is being brought into the cooperative effort to help develop ways to set up continuous GPS monitoring, Kent said.

This could put the cooperative effort at the forefront of using GPS systems in emergency responses to earthquakes.

While seismologists have devices to help calculate the intensity of earthquakes, these new high-rate GPS systems, which take measurements every second, also help calculate the intensity, Kent said.

“This is an important part of understanding how earthquakes work and possibly responding to earthquakes,” Kent said. “I think 10 or 20 years down the road this high rate GPS will be common place.”

“The unexpected tragedy in Haiti rattled our hearts and defied our perception of safety,” Reid said in a statement. “ANSS is a necessary step in order to protect Nevadans against the devastation of natural disasters and provide the nation with advance notice of seismic activity.”
