Time to Stop the Fear Mongering on Medicare

Here we go again.

Senator Reid is working overtime toward passage of fiscally responsible health insurance reform that cuts costs, protects patients’ choice of their doctors, and ensures quality, affordable medical care for all Nevadans.

However, Republican obstructionists and naysayers continue to fear monger and tell untruths about an essential program to Nevada seniors: Medicare.

Defenders of the status quo would have seniors believe that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act cuts Medicare benefits and services.

This is simply not true.

On the contrary, the Senate health insurance reform legislation protects seniors’ benefits by making Medicare a stronger, more sustainable program.

What the Republicans and insurance companies are not telling you is that the only Medicare changes will be the elimination of waste, fraud and abuse.

Any guaranteed Medicare benefits that seniors receive today will be there after the legislation passes.

Period.

But it even gets better.

All 328,000 Medicare beneficiaries will have access to free preventive services, like colonoscopies and prostate cancer screenings.

Additionally, the bill takes additional bold steps to reduce the cost of prescription drug medications. This is achieved by dramatically reducing the Medicare “donut hole” and discounting generic drugs and biologics for low and middle income seniors.

Nevada’s seniors are demanding health insurance reform that improves care.

It’s time to stop the fear mongering on Medicare.
