President Obama Congratulates Reid on “Man of the Year” Award
February 16, 2010
Dear Senator Reid:
I am honored to have this opportunity to congratulate you on receiving the “Man of the Year” award from the Sun City Anthem Democratic Club. It has been a privilege to work with you and to see firsthand your commitment to improving the lives of Nevadans and all Americans.
In just the past year, you have passed legislation to ensure equal pay for equal work, to bring health care to four million more children of needy families, to stop the predatory practices of credit card companies and to prevent tobacco companies from continuing to prey on our children. You passed a budget that made critical investments in our veterans, energy, education, and health care.
And, perhaps most importantly, one year ago I signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which would not have been possible without your able leadership in the Senate. That legislation saved our economy from the brink of disaster and kept our country from sinking into a depression the likes of which has not been seen since the 1930’s. The Recovery Act put a tax cut into the pockets of 95 percent of working Americans as well as small business owners. It has kept teachers, firefighters and police on the job and has resulted in projects that have improved our nation’s transportation systems, schools, and green energy economy.
And now, you are showing critical leadership as we work to rein in the worst practices of Wall Street, recoup taxpayers’ money used to bailout the nation’s leading banks, and pass a jobs bill to help get more Americans back to work.
I am thankful to have your sound counsel, your energetic support and your leadership at the helm of the United States Senate. Congratulations on this award.
Sincerely,
President Barack Obama
